Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries is a fast casual restaurant chain that originated in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. As the name suggests, Five Guys sells mainly hamburgers and french fries, though it also sells a small number of other items. Although it's considered a fast food restaurant, all food is cooked to order.

History

Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by Janie and Jerry Murrell and their five sons, the "Five Guys." The first location, which no longer exists, was in the Westmont Shopping Center at the corner of S. Glebe Rd and Columbia Pike. Buns were baked by Brenner's Bakery of Arlington Inc., owned and operated by Gino E. Pellegrino, only a few doors down. In 2002, there were five locations in Northern Virginia run by the family. The restaurants had gained popularity among locals, and the Murrells decided to franchise the stores. As of October 2007, there were more than 205 locations along the U.S. East Coast from Florida to Connecticut. There are 1,000 more in the building or planning stage. The company claims that each store has a revenue of about one million dollars per year.

Accolades

Five Guys has received numerous awards in Washington area publications including "Number 1 Burger" by Washingtonian Magazine for seven years. Since franchising, it has also received awards in other cities, including Annapolis, Richmond, Charlottesville, Philadelphia, and Virginia Beach. It is also Zagat rated.

Menu

The Five Guys menu is restricted to only a few items. The main menu item is the hamburger. The regular burger consists of two beef patties, and the "little burger" has one. American cheese and bacon can each be added for an additional charge. All toppings from an extensive selection can be added for free. The other main item is french fries, boardwalk-style and fried in peanut oil. There are two sizes, regular and large, and two varieties, regular "Five Guys Style" or spicy "Cajun" style (Old Bay). The other menu items are hot dogs, available with bacon and cheese, and grilled cheese and veggie sandwiches. Most locations, except for a few in food courts, offer free in-the-shell peanuts for patrons to eat while they wait for their food. The Georgetown location in Washington, D.C. is the only Five Guys restaurant with a bar.
